This week New Yorkers have been subjected to the terrifying truth about the vast amount of calories they consume with every bite of their favourite foods. All fast-food outlets and restaurants that have 15 or more establishments across the United States are now obliged to state the calorie count for each item on their menus, and this has thrown up some truly shocking results!
Carb count laws
The law was introduced to tackle the growing issues of obesity and Type-2 diabetes, and the city of New York is acting as the 'guinea pig' while the Department of Health monitors the results. Outlets that have not complied with the ruling by Friday 18th July face fines ranging from $200 to $2,000. Other cities that are pushing for new carb-count laws include Santa Clara and San Francisco.
Enormous calories shock
Those people who eat out a few times a week or even those who just grab a muffin with their morning coffee have been shocked by the enormus calorie counts of some of their favourite dishes and snacks.
630 Calorie muffins
Cara, a 27 year old from the Forest Hills area said: "I was blown away. I'm not a no-carb type of person, and I usually don't even think about it. But you pick up a little muffin with your coffee, and it has 630 calories in it? That's a bit extreme!"
