Those Locavores have it so easy nowadays! In the States, Locavores – people who eat only locally-produced food – can now pick up their iPhone and ask it what produce is in season locally and what unusual things might be coming in from a nearby town.
The Locavore application for the iPhone uses built-in GPS and location awareness to find the user's location then it shows them which foods they can find which are in season and on a market-stall near them. The application uses gorgeous colour pictures to remind users what each of its 234 fruits and vegetables looks like – just in case you want to check what a rambutan looks like!
Locavore (which just launched a new 2.0 application) gathers information about farmer's markets and food availability from partners such as www.localharvest.org and the Natural Resources Defense Council.
The application can be bought at the iTunes App Store for $3.
Unfortunately, the developers haven't released the application in Europe, but let's hope that someone will latch onto this very cool idea soon enough.
If you don't have an iPhone or an iTouch but still fancy knowing what's in season around the United States, then have a look at the Epicurious Seasonal Ingredient Map, which works in a similar way without the price tag!
