 #

What will we all be talking about, food-wise, in 2009? The Food Channel in the U.S has come up with ten food-related trends that they think will take off, or get bigger this year. They conducted their research with the World Thought Bank (http://www.neemee.com/).

The editor of The Food Channel, Kay Logsdon, said:
For more than 20 years, the chefs and editors at The Food Channel have tracked emerging and mainstreaming food trends for our work developing food products, ideas and recipes for some of the world's largest food companies ... In our new role as consumers' one-stop-shop for all things food, we have decided to share this insider information for the first time.

So, their trends are...

  1. Home on the Range : The downsizing of the economy breeds a new generation of home chefs, more kitchen-capable and food-savvy than ever before!

  2. Foodie 2.0 : Growth of food communities, online and in real-life.

  3. Going, Going Green : Our kitchens to become eco-conscious areas

  4. Living La Vida Locavore : Eating local and seasonal produce, (preferably organic) both at home and in restaurants

  5. TMI? : What's better, to be given calorie information in every establishment, in bold lettering, or to choose whether we look or not? Will it actually achieve the goal of reduction in obesity?

  6. FrankenFood :The rise of the prevalence of bioengineering and genetically modified food.

  1. Food Philanthropy : Individuals and companies address world hunger

  1. Food Insecurity : The call for tighter food controls, after the tomato and jalapeno scares of 2008

  1. Brewing Business : Coffee businesses striking a balance when cost is an issue; the divide widens between the exotic and day-to-day food needs

  2. Where in the World... : is the next flavor trend coming from? Peruvian and Middle Eastern tastes to take the fore

...and finally, the 'Bonus'!

Clandestine Cuisine : Underground eateries and word-of-mouth advertising finds you some little gems, on the quiet.
