Restaurant Description
Equally at home serving a party of visiting celebrities or your special anniversary date, the Ivy has maintained an excellent reputation for quality no-nonsense cuisine.
A mostly relaxed but busy atmosphere, don't be suprised if you see more than one famous face enjoying the cosy surroundings. Modernist art, beautiful stained glass and rich wood panelling give a traditional feel to the place, the black and white photographs of famous film stars add a nostalgic 30's touch. This isn't the place to create your own art though, photography inside the restaurant is strictly forbidden.
Enduringly popular with theatregoers, the name 'The Ivy' was fittingly coined by an actress; Alice Deysia, "Don't worry, we will always come to see you, we will cling together like the ivy.." she said when referrring to the original founders Abel Glandellini and Mario Gallati. They adopted the name, and having started the small cafe in 1917 they cannot have imagined the long running success ahead.
AA Gill is oft quoted as saying: "A table at The Ivy is one of the most sought-after pieces of furniture in London", and many have written on the 'normal' 6 months waiting list. However if you are flexible and willing to compromise a little, it's not unknown to call in the morning and be seated by lunch time.
The restaurant was carefully restored by Chris Corbin and Jeremy King in 1990 and recently sold to the current owner Richard Caring.
